PEIJet 1010 Ultem | Filament-PM
Ultem (polyetherimide) is a next-level 3D printing material reserved for industrial 3D printers with advanced components and skilled makers. If printed correctly, a printed part from PEIJet can have the strength of an aluminum part. Beyond the fact that it is mechanically outperforming almost every desktop filament, it has stunning thermal properties, including an HDT-B of 200°C and a Vicat softening temperature of 215°C. PEIJet also owns interesting flame retardant properties, including a UL94 5VA rating.

How to store filaments
Humidity and UV light can decrease the filament quality and weaken its mechanical properties. We strongly recommend storing open filaments in a dry and dark place. You can find a complete guide on how to properly store your filament here
Where to throw print fails and supports?
We kindly ask our customers to cope with plastic waste responsibly. Failed prints, support material, rafts, or brims should be liquidated according to the local guidelines. Paradoxically, in most cases, it is better to throw this waste in the regular trash can, as most of the material waste created in 3D printing is not identified, which causes more problems than benefits in the waste sorting facilities.
PEIJet 1010 Ultem | Filament-PM

PEIJet also owns interesting flame retardant properties, including a UL94 5VA rating.
Bear in mind that Ultem is exceptionally moisture sensitive, and a re-dry of the filament is mandatory before each use (see drying parameters below). Don't worry; the spool is specially designed to withstand high drying temperatures. We recommend applying up to three layers of high heat adhesive like Magigoo HT on the print bed. The use of an actively heated chamber is also required to heat at least to 70°C. After the printing process (once the heated chamber stops heating), the material will shrink, which can damage your printing bed; remove the printed part as quickly as possible from the bed after the printing process.
Features:
- Extremely strong, tough, and durable
- High flexural modulus
- Good thermal stability
- UL94 5VA rating
General information about ULTEM :
PEI is an advanced expert-reserved material and is one of the highest-performing thermoplastics in the industry with excellent mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Its mechanical properties can be compared to this of aluminum. Unfortunately, it is reserved for advanced 3D printers with a nozzle going up to 400°C and an actively heated chamber. PEI is often interchangeably referred to as ULTEM. ULTEM is a brand name and a subset of PEI and many variants exist, with drastically varying thermal and mechanical properties. The most common variants in 3D printing are ULTEM 1010 and ULTEM 9085.
Printability of PEI filament
The temperature in the chamber must be maintained at all times, otherwise, irregularities may occur and the adhesion of the different layers may suffer. As the temperature of the PEI is between 345 and 400°C, you will need an extruder capable of rising to these levels.
For printing, it is necessary to apply special glue (e.g. MAGIGOO HT) to the mat, for a perfect first layer we recommend applying the glue in three layers. It is also necessary to use a printer with a closed chamber heated to at least 70° C. After it's printed, the material shrinks as the chamber gradually cools and, due to its strength, is able to damage the pad, so be sure to move the printout away as quickly as possible. Ultem is extremely susceptible to moisture and it can easily absorb water even from the air which can affect the strength of the final print. It is necessary to dry the material preferably at 110 ° C before each use (in case of doubts ULTEM spools are able to handle the heat).
PEI mechanical and thermal properties
Depending on the type of ULTEM the mechanical and thermal properties can vary.
Looking at high heat applications, ULTEM 1010 boasts a Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) of 216ºC whereas ULTEM 9085 only has an HDT of 153ºC.
ULTEM 1010 is actually the strongest material available in the FDM materials family. Looking at tensile strength rating in the XZ orientation, ULTEM 1010 carries a rating of 9,300 psi while ULTEM 9085 is only 6,800 psi.
Some applications such as panels, tools, jigs, fixtures, and clips may require some controlled flexibility. When a tough and durable material with some ductility is needed, ULTEM 9085 is the best choice. Due to its lower flexural strength of 16,200 psi, it’s slightly more forgiving than ULTEM 1010 when it’s necessary for your design.

Filament-PM is a Czech filament manufacturer with a wide and still growing range of materials, from everyday PLA and PETG to flame-retardant, ESD and fibre-reinforced engineering grades. It suits beginners and professionals alike. JustCreate3D keeps a large selection of Filament-PM in stock in its warehouse in Senec, Slovakia, and dispatches orders quickly.
Filament-PM was among the first producers of 3D printer filament, starting back in 2013. It is an official partner of PRUSA Manufacturing: the printed parts of the Prusa MK2 and MK3 printers were made from Filament-PM PETG. Today eight production lines run day and night. The company also watches its ecological footprint – its factory runs on renewable energy and it produces recycled filament from its own plastic waste.
